Bikini season is never complete without flaunting our gorgeous, hairless bodies in a teeny, weeny (polka dot) bikini or any swimwear of choice as we bask in the warm summer sun or frolic at the beach.
Effortless beauty, huh? Not! It takes months to get to that bikini bod state and an extra day or two to get us ready and hair free in all the right places.
In this blog, we’ll focus on what some people consider as a “taboo” part of hair removal – your “buShh” (see, even its name suggests that you keep it down-low).
With all these amazing hair removal options available, which is the best bikini hair removal method and product that would suit such a sensitive area of our body?
Over the years, shaving and waxing are pretty much popular among women – shaving being quick and pain-free and waxing for its long-lasting results.
But to be honest, both methods are not all beer and skittles (or beer and Doritos!).
Thinking back of my experience in bikini hair removal, I’ve had some really funny ones and some bloody scary ones (like, literally) – Definitely Reddit material I’d say!
So, before y’all make a mistake and contribute to Reddit, I want to educate you on the best pubic hair removal products!
Not a fan of razors and wax and want to know how to remove bikini hair without waxing or shaving? We also have other options.

What It Is & What To Expect
Shaving is a hair removal method that involves using a bladed tool such as a razor to remove hair as close as possible to the skin.
This bikini area hair removal method is known to be inexpensive, super quick and pain-free, perfect for people on the go who have a lower pain threshold (aka pain wimps like me).
Bikini-ready in minutes, stubbles a few hours later. What’s good though is that most razors are travel-friendly so you can easily take it with you and use it anytime you please.
Tips For Shaving the Bikini Area
Trim The Bush Before Shaving
Shaving with a full-on-bush that you grew during winter can get caught between the razor blades and cause it to tug on your skin.
Get The Best Razor for The Bikini Area
It’s the key to a good shave. We’re not talking about the same razor that you’d use for your legs but instead a slimmer one to carefully glide through the delicate contours of that area.
Find a Good and Comfortable Position
The safest way to shave the pubic area is by laying a towel on the bathroom floor and sitting on it with a mirror in front of you. That way, you can pretty much calculate where the razor is going instead of accidentally slicing your flesh with the razor.
Not all of us are gymnasts who are flexible enough to turn ourselves into a donut just to see if we missed a spot.
A friend once tried shaving standing up, with one leg raised on the toilet seat, she accidentally slipped, and you pretty much can guess what happened.
Be Choosy in What You Apply Pre and Post Shave
Dry shaving is definitely a no-no as it is a surefire way to get nasty razor burns, but so is using your regular hair conditioner or shower gel as shaving foam and body lotion after shaving.
Apart from getting razor burns, remember that your vagina is a sensitive area with its own pH and colonies of healthy bacteria that keep it balanced.
Using harsh chemicals, such as those found in your conditioner, body wash, and lotion not only can cause skin irritation but also kill these bacteria, causing an imbalance in pH levels that can make you prone to infections (like yeast).
Stick to organic or natural products as much as possible.
Shave By Sections
How to use shaving cream on pubic hair? Sections, amigo.
Apply only on the area being shaved and not the entire vag. Again, it’s all about visibility. You can do the top area first, then the right lip, and then the other, before going over any spots you might’ve missed.
Want to know how to shave stubble on the pubic area?
No worries, just soak yourself in a tub of warm water for at least 5 minutes to soften the hair, apply a natural shaving product and shave away as discussed above.
- Shaving is fast, easy, and painless.
- Razors are easy to find.
- Hair grows back and can be seen the next day.
- Need water to shave.
- Can irritate the skin.
- Shaving has more impact on the environment since you throw razors away frequently and manufacturing plastic has an impact also.

Trimming and shaving may seem the same at first glance. After all, both pertain to cutting hair with the use of a sharp object, such as a razor or a trimmer (a type of razor with teeth or serrations).
The main difference though between the two is how far you cut the hair.
With shaving, you’re normally left with uber smooth skin (at least a few minutes after shaving!) this is because you shave as close as possible to the skin.
Trimming, on the other hand, cuts hair just like shaving, but because of the serrations or comb attachments of the trimmer, it does not cut hair as close to the skin as shaving does, therefore you’d still feel that there’s hair but they’re clipped to a manageable or cleaner length.
Because of this, trimming may offer advantages and disadvantages over shaving, which we’ll look at later.
Tips for Choosing a Good Trimmer for the Bikini Area
The way how to use an electric razor for bikini area depends on the kind you’re going to chose – wet or dry trimmer. (meaning, if it can go in the shower or not)
If a wet trimmer, then I would advise taking a shower, exfoliating and then trimming it, when the pores are open.
If dry, then I would advise doing the same as above and then, once exiting the shower, using the trimmer.
Electric Razors or Electric Shavers
They’re a good choice for someone who wants a sustainable razor they can use outside of the shower. They do make wet/dry shavers if you prefer to use in the shower.
This type of razor is generally bulkier than manual razors and can pose a challenge shaving the finely detailed bikini area.
In my opinion, if doing the bikini area, then a wet shaver would make the best hair trimmer for the bikini area.
As for legs, it will do its job, but remember even with the best bikini electric razor, you will never get as smooth a shave as with a manual razor.
However, some women perfect the electric style because you can’t cut yourself easily with an electric razor.
Battery Operated Units
They are usually less expensive and they can go anywhere, for last minute touch-ups. They can be tossed in an overnight bag or makeup bag, making them convenient.
You do need to consider the fact that you will need to buy and replace batteries, and that these trimmers usually cannot go in the shower.
They can be corded or cordless.
Cordless units can usually go in the shower, making cleanup afterward a non-issue. A corded model will not need batteries at all, so it is always ready to use as long as you are near a power source.
A good bikini trimmer would have to be a smaller, maneuverable trimmer for the bikini area. Look for one that is light and has a trimmer head about an inch wide, but not much wider.
Tips on How to Use a Trimmer For Your Bikini Area
Successfully trimming your bikini area begins by choosing the best bikini trimmers for women.
Not all bikini trimmers are created equally, you’d want something that is effective, would give you value for money and will last you a good amount of time (like the suggestions below).
Apart from having the right tool, knowing the correct process and some helpful tips can ensure trimming success without any bloodshed!
Prep The Area
Make sure that the area is clean, exfoliated and dry (especially if you’re using a dry-use trimmer).
If the unwanted hair is quite long, you may trim it with scissors until it’s less than 2 inches long. This will help your trimmer function smoothly and gives you a clearer view when shaping.
Trim Hair to The Desired Length
Hold your skin taut and run the trimmer in sections beginning from the bottom and working your way up.
Want to get as close to the skin as possible? You can do so by simply changing the angle at which you trim. Holding your trimmer vertically against the skin can help give you a closer shave if you prefer that.
Using a shaver? You may use a shower or shaving gel with wet/dry use shavers. This will help lessen razor burns and allows your razor to glide smoothly.
Rinse The Trimmed Area with Water
Get rid of those pesky pieces of hair by washing it off with water.
If you trimmed/shaved as close as possible to the skin, you may consider using Tend Skin to alleviate any skin irritations.
Clean Your Tool to Keep It Ready for Next Use
Depending on the manufacturer’s instruction, you may either place the trimmer head under running water (for wet/dry use) or simply brush the hair off (dry use).
Not only is this hygienic, doing so also ensures that your trimmer will keep its performance the next time you use it.
- No pain.
- No nicks.
- No razor burns.
- No itchy ingrown hair.
- Does not offer smooth, hair-free skin.

What It Is & What to Expect
A pain-free hair removal method that works by applying a thick cream that weakens and dissolves visible hair making it easy to wipe it off with a cloth.
Results are good; however, it doesn’t last as long as waxing.
Most depilatory creams are chemical laden. It’s strong enough to weaken and melt hair, just imagine what it can do for your skin.
If you chose one of the best bikini hair removal creams, you can expect a smooth and hair free bikini area. Hair will start to grow back in a day or two and the regrowth may appear finer and with softer tips compared to shaving.
Tips on How to Use Hair Removal Cream on Bikini Line
Choose the Right Hair Removal Products for The Pubic Area
That depilatory cream that you use on your limbs is a no-go for your bikini.
Choose variants that are specifically made for that area or those made for sensitive skin as they are the best Brazilian hair removal cream for that job.
Check for Any Allergic Reaction
Always a must before trying out anything, especially if it’s a new product.
Follow Product Instructions
Never extend the application of the cream longer than what is stated on the package.
We’re dealing with chemicals here, even if it says sensitive skin formula it still has the capacity to give you burns.
A friend of mine decided to try her regular depilatory cream to man-groom her now ex-bf, she decided to leave it on longer than what was indicated on the package thinking that since she’s dealing with coarser hair, it might need a few more minutes.
She wiped it off and noticed some part of the outer skin layer came off as well, leaving some parts raw and painful. Ouch! Definitely unsexy!
Apply the Product In Front of a Mirror
And apply it only on the outer parts of your coochie.
Avoid the super sensitive parts such as the inner part of your labia, your clit, etc. to avoid irritation and major burning sensation.
Use a Spatula to Apply the Cream
And again, do it in sections. This not only ensures a mess-free application but also that your product is going where you want it to go.
Doing it in section helps minimize the risk of leaving the other areas soaked in the cream while you wipe the other area off.
Gently Wipe Off the Cream with a Soft Washcloth
Avoid sun exposure on the area for at least 24 hours after using a depilatory cream. Your skin might be extra sensitive that it may easily get sunburned.

What It Is & What to Expect
A method of hair removal that uses either a soft or hard wax to pull hair from the root resulting in a smoother, hair-free skin for days or even weeks.
If you’re looking for amazing and long(er)-lasting results with minimal touch ups compared to shaving, then this is the best way to bikini hair removal for you.
Expect a lot of pain, redness, tears and screaming at the top of your lungs (even bruising for some). This hair removal method is not for the faint at heart.
If you’re sensitive to pain, stick to painless methods (just look at my Pain-o-Meter as a guide) and stay away from this. Anything that pulls hair from the root is painful but the result is really stunning (it’s the best bikini hair removal method for me albeit being a bit of torture).
I personally prefer going to the salon for my Brazilian, as I tried waxing myself before and I still wince to this day as I recall myself crying, screaming and bleeding (guess I can’t get up the courage to pull the wax off and be the one that causes myself pain).
But if you’re a Do-It-Yourselfer who’s shy of exposing your lady bits to other people, be my guest.
I have products and tips for you that I learned the hard way.
Bikini Care Tips on How to Wax Pubic Area
Check for Any Allergic Reaction
As some waxes may contain honey, beeswax, and other possible allergens, make it a habit to test on a small portion of your wrist before using it on your bikini area.
Trim The Bush (but not too short!)
The longer it is, the more painful it is when you pull it.
Not only that, when you’re dealing with warm, melted wax, you sorta lose control and spread it accidentally on surrounding areas doubling the pain factor because of area size and hair length.
Trimming your hair too short, on the other hand, will leave no space for the wax to adhere to. Thus, it won’t pull any hair at all.
A good tip is to keep the hair at least ¼ inches long.
Prep Your Skin Prior to Bikini Waxing
How? By taking a bath and gently scrubbing the bikini line with a mild scrub such as GiGi No Bump Body Scrub. This amazing scrub is also perfect for when your unwanted hair starts growing as it has Salicylic acid to nix ingrown hair.
Use the Best Bikini Wax Strips or the Best Waxing Kit for Pubic Area
Never sacrifice results for the price.
There are lots of cheap waxing products out there that don’t even pull the hair out or that are too chemical laden. Remember that we’re dealing with a sensitive area here.
Always Test the Wax’s Temperature Prior to Applying It on Your Skin
You want smooth hair free skin, not 2nd-degree burns.
Wax in Sections
Doing so can lessen the pain.
Also, applying a numbing cream prior to waxing can help.
Pull Quickly in the Opposite Direction of Hair Growth
Not pulling quickly enough prolongs your agony while pulling the hair in the same direction of hair growth may cause the hair to break, requiring you to repeat waxing that section, and again prolonging your agony.
Treat Any Irritation with a Good Hydrocortisone Cream
Having chicken skin right after waxing is normal. This should go away within 24 hours. Thus, experts suggest skipping swimming and wetting the waxed area for at least 24 hours to avoid irritation.
Should you experience redness, itching and irritation occur, you may treat it with a Hydrocortisone cream like the CeraVe Hydrocortisone Cream.
Extra Tip: Don’t Wax Before and During Your Period
Your skin tends to be super sensitive 3 days prior to getting your period.
Increased sensitivity = Immense pain. Nuff said.
- Offers lasting results.
- Leaves skin smooth.
- Takes away dead skin cells too, leaving skin brighter and fresher.
- May also cause ingrown hair (if you’re prone to it).
- May cause burns.

What It Is & What to Expect
A semi-permanent method of hair removal that utilizes a device featuring multiple tweezers to pull hair from the root.
Like waxing, results last for days up to weeks before seeing some regrowth.
You must be thinking “What?! Can you epilate your bikini area??”. Well yes, yes you can!
But!!! Expect a great deal of pain.
Very much like waxing, where you pull hair from the root, this does that but at a much slower pace and fewer hairs at each rotation. It’s like prolonging the agony.
I must note, that this method made me prone to ingrown hair bumps. I’d honestly stick with waxing if I’m going to subject myself to pain anyway.
Tips for Choosing an Epilator for the Bikini Area
Consider the Power Source
Your first time epilating the bikini area will take some time, plus, the hair is coarse and hard to remove. The best epilator for bikini will probably be a corded model because they have an unlimited supply of power and are usually stronger and pull coarse hair well.
Choose a Small Epilator
You don’t want your hand getting tired and there is not a ton of surface area in the pubic region, so you don’t need a lot of tweezers. You need to get around small, curved areas, so an epilator with a smaller epilating field will be better.
See What You Are Doing
An epilator with a built-in light will help a lot.
An Epilator with a Trimmer Comes in Handy
If you need to trim the hair first, before epilating, a trimmer will be your best friend.
Tips on How to Epilate Bikini Area
Start by Choosing the Right Epilator to Do The Job
As much as massage rollers work for minimizing the pain when epilating your legs, it doesn’t work the same way when dealing with sensitive areas such as your bikini and underarms.
If your epilator comes with removable massage rollers, take them out when working on your bikini area.
Trim, Trim, Trim!
Always a must before any hair removal method.
A long time ago I made the mistake of epilating my legs with hairs that were too long (about the length of a grain of rice, which is perfect for waxing, but not so much for epilating).
Guess who had red chicken skin for 3 days? You guessed it – ME!!!
Prep the Area by Taking a Bath and Using a Mild Exfoliator
(Again, GiGi’s is such a good brand for this!)
Doing this helps soften the hair follicles and remove any dead skin that may, later on, clog pores and cause ingrown hair.
Epilate in Sections and Go Against the Direction Your Hair Grows
There’s no rush, go slow. Make imaginary sections. Once you finish a section, take five, drink some tea, dance to some Beyonce – you know, normal stuff!
Hold the epilators almost perpendicular (so, almost at a 90 degrees angle) to your skin for the best hair grabbing action.
Treat it with a good Hydrocortisone cream or by applying cold compress on the area.
Avoid wetting the area for 24 hours after the treatment – meaning, excess sweating (no gym or sauna) and no to swimming pools.
Also, do not work out or have sex right after epilating. Epilating is not something you do right before a hot date.
Sweat combined with activity can introduce bacteria into follicles (which can lead to folliculitis) where the hair has just been removed.
Aftercare is a Must!
Use an after epilation serum to prevent ingrown hairs. A top-rated serum many professionals recommend is European Wax Center Ingrown Hair Serum.
Wear loose clothes and cotton panties. Plan for the area to be red and sensitive for 24 hours.
Bonus Tip For Epilating Brazilian Style
It is going to hurt. Start with the area farthest from your intimate area, as this hurts the least. Then work your way in.
Do not perform this style if you use Accutane. This acne treatment alters skin texture and can cause irritation.
- Epilating lasts for weeks and leaves the skin smooth.
- Epilating is cost and environmentally friendly, you only need the epilator and a source of power to be hair-free for many years.
- Epilating is painful.
- You must have access to a power source.

IPL or Laser Hair Removal
What It Is & What to Expect
A nearly permanent hair removal method that uses light energy such as IPL or HPL to target and kill hair from the follicles. The result? Hair free skin for months with minimal touch-ups.
Being completely chemical and pain-free, it’s considered as the best bikini hair removal for sensitive skin.
Users experience a mild sting to no pain at all. Lasers are highly effective in removing unwanted hair, however, results are not immediate.
You’d need at least 6-8 treatments with an interval of two weeks depending on the area being treated. You’d notice that your hair grows in patches and is finer than before until…Poof! It’s gone and not growing at all!
Though it kills hair from the root, some hair follicles may have been dormant during the time of treatment and over time can be activated and grow. These may look like a regrowth, but these are actually new hairs. Thus, it is best to keep your laser device with you for touch-ups.
Bikini Care Tips When Doing IPL Treatments
- Choose the Best IPL for Bikini Area – IPLs with a sleeker design and a smaller treatment window is preferred for the bikini area.
- Take a Shower Prior to Lasering – A clean area increases the laser’s efficiency.
- Shave the Treatment Area – Shaving allows the laser to penetrate the hair thoroughly up to its root compared to fully grown hair.
- Avoid Tanning Before and After Treatment – Doing so may decrease the laser’s efficiency.
- Avoid Drinking Coffee or Other Caffeinated Products Prior to Treatment.
- Do Not Take NSAIDs a Week or Two Prior to Treatment – These medications can increase your photosensitivity and can make you prone to bruising.
- Nearly painless.
- Offers lasting results (months!).
- Doesn’t cause skin irritation.
- Not available for all skin and hair tones.
- May cause burns if used on deep skin tones or areas with tattoos.

(This by far is the best hair removal system for bikini area, in my opinion)
Q: What’s The Best Hair Removal For Bikini Area?
A: If you’re in no hurry at all, I personally find waxing to be the best hair removal method for the bikini area.
Most waxes especially brands like GiGi and Moom are all natural and are safe to use down there.
If your goal is to be hair free for life or at least for the longest amount of time, then I suggest getting an IPL machine. IPL is totally safe and painless for your southern region and has a lasting result.
That’s what I did – I went to a salon for 3 years once a month to get a Brazilian, but now I’ve invested in IPL to be smooth down there.
Q: Is It Better To Wax Or Shave The Pubic Hair?
A: Waxing is definitely better. You get long-lasting results sans razor burns, ingrown hair bumps, and other irritations. It may be painful but the results are definitely worth it.
Q: Do Depilatory Creams Make Hair Thicker?
A: Based on my own experience, it doesn’t. Hair removal creams do not change the hair’s thickness or texture.
Q: Does Hair Removal Cream Work On Pubic Hair?
A: Yes, hair removal cream works on pubic hair. For your safety, make sure that you’re choosing a gentler formula or one that is specifically formulated to be used on the bikini area.
Q: Can Nair Be Used On Pubic Hair?
A: Veet and Nair are one of the most popular brands favored by women and both have their own sensitive formula that can be used on your pubic hair.
Follow the instructions to a T and you should be fine.
Q: Is Shaving Or Hair Removal Cream Better?
A: Because depilatory creams are full of harmful chemicals that can accidentally get smeared on restricted areas, I’d rather go with shaving (if I had to choose between the two methods).
Shaving is more natural, takes minimal effort and has no waiting time.
Q: Can You Epilate Bikini Area? Better Yet – Do A Brazilian?
A: Absolutely! But before you do, try epilating less sensitive parts of your body first (such as your legs) to get accustomed to the pain. Once you’re used to it, you can have a go at your bikini area.
Q: How To Use Epilator To Remove Pubic Hair?
A: Check out The Best Way to Epilate Your Bikini Area section above.
Q: How To Use An Electric Razor For Bikini Area?
A: Using an electric razor is very similar to using the trimmer as most razors have a trimmer function. For more information, check out the Best Way on How to Use A Trimmer For Your Bikini Area section of this article!
Putting It All Together
The best bikini hair removal method is one that is all-natural and doesn’t put you at risk of getting skin irritation, ingrown hair bumps, razor burns or chemical burns.
For me, the choice is between waxing and IPL.
I’m sure everyone has their own preference when it comes to hair removal. When choosing what’s right for you, consider the amount of time you have to commit to this routine, the result that you want, your budget and of course your skin type.
I hope the information, product recommendations and tips mentioned above shed light on the most pressing and taboo question on which method and product to use down there.
Let me know if you have any question or product suggestion that you think might be helpful for all the girls out there.
