It’s ideal for carrying with you in your purse when traveling as it’s truly the tiniest epilator out there. But it does take a bit of practice and it is painful.

An epilator is a small electrical appliance designed to remove unwanted hair. An epilator plucks the hair from the root the same as waxing but without the mess or skin irritation.
It usually has a rotating head with between 6 and 48 tweezers, depending on the model. They are usually battery-powered or plugged into a wall outlet.
Why Choose an Epilator Over Other Hair Removal Options
Well, the best way to answer that is to just show you the pros and cons of different hair removal methods.
Shaving
Pros
- Cheap.
- Easy.
- Painless (usually).
- Available everywhere.
Cons
- Hair grows back in a day or two, and it is sharp from being cut. Think ‘stubble’, and you know what this feels like.
If you can only tolerate shaving (e.g., due to it being the least painful), then I highly recommend you switch from a regular multi-blade women’s razor and just put some more money into a good safety razor for women.

- Painless, simple.

- It can only be used for super fine hair. Not a good option for coarse hair, like legs or underarms. Generally done on facial hair or arms.
Depilatory cream
Pros
- Removes hair, even thick coarse hair.
- Legs are super smooth and sexy.
Cons
- Must leave on for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Depilatory creams are usually stinky.
- Depilatory creams can tingle or burn if left on the skin for too long.

Pros
- Threading is very accurate and thorough.
- Someone else does the work while you sit back and relax. You get to be babied, we all like that – admit it!
Cons
- You can’t do it yourself (well, unless you teach yourself, but be aware there’s the risk that you will thread off half of your eyebrow on the first try!)
- Not practical or cost-effective for large areas.
- It can be painful.

Yes, I know, they are usually used for waxing and tattoos, but they will also work for epilating.
So, out of these options, only waxing, threading and epilating are longer-term solutions. Waxing is great if speed is what you are after. But some areas are challenging and messy to wax at home.
Threading is good for small areas, but it can be a hassle to drive to the salon every two weeks. The costs add up too.
Epilating is a clean simple solution that works from home. No salons needed, discreet and gets the job done.
Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing an Epilator
Does It Get The Job Done?
Some epilators do not completely pull out all hair and some inadvertently get cut instead of epilated.
This is not what you want.
Check the reviews to make sure you are getting a good quality epilator with strong plucking action.
Tweeze Factor
How many tweezers does the epilator have? The more it has the faster it will get the job done provided the tweezers are efficient at plucking and do not cut or break the hair.
Does It Have an Efficiency Cap?
Some epilators come with efficiency caps. These special caps allow the barrel to get super close to your skin to get the closest hair removal and the maximum amount of hair removed.
These caps are, in my opinion, are especially great for beginners since the caps don’t allow you to push down too much on your skin and the epilator does the job for you. Just slide it over those hairs!
Does It Have a Built-In Light?
Some epilators have a built-in light, and it comes in pretty handy as you can see finer, lighter colored hair that you may not see otherwise.
Wet or Dry?
If you like to epilate in the shower, use a wet-dry model. It might save you time because the water can help distract you from the discomfort.
Cordless or Corded?
This is a matter of preference. (Although, cordless ones cannot go in the shower.)

It’s simple – just plug the device into a socket, or insert batteries (if the model has batteries) and place it against your skin at a slight angle.
Keep the skin taut and move over an area slowly until smooth. You may need to give each area a few passes to get any hairs that were left behind the first time.
After that, use mild soap and water to rinse well, dry the skin and apply a moisturizer or aftershave lotion for women depending on how prone you are to ingrown hairs or folliculitis.

- In super sensitive areas, have these areas professionally waxed first. That way you get the hair removed all in one go. When the hair starts to grow back, use the epilator once a week. There will be less hair so it will be more comfortable.
- Use a little baby powder on the area you are epilating (if you’re using it dry). It will help the epilator glide better and the tweezers won’t catch your skin.
- If you are in the shower, use a smudge of shower gel to help the epilator glide and soften hairs for easier removal.
- Take a bath or shower before using the epilator. This opens your pores and makes the hair easier to remove.
- Use a toner or aftershave on your skin after epilating to prevent ingrown hairs.
- Always epilate only clean skin, using clean hands. The hair follicle is vulnerable to infection right after the hair is removed so minimize bacteria and use an aftershave.
