Noooooo!!! I screamed from my hotel room as I opened my luggage all the way through to see the extent of the damage.
The problem: Broken foundation bottle – yes, it leaked through my makeup pouch, onto my clothes, other makeup, even on my white sneakers and sandals.
I spent the first few hours of what I thought would be a glorious holiday, cleaning this mess and doing laundry in the tub – no fun at all!
Automatically, it dampened the whole holiday feel. I kind of regretted dumping all my makeup and brushes in a regular top zip pouch and mourned the death of my expensive foundation.
From then on, I was on the lookout for the best travel makeup bag to stash my ‘face’ (that’s what I call my makeup and the gazillion stuff I lug around) in wherever I go, whether it’s to the gym, office, out of town with the girls or an amazing vacation abroad.
I don’t want the same horrific makeup mishap to happen ever again and I don’t want that to happen to you either!

Why Should I Get a Travel Makeup Bag?
The value of a good makeup bag is often overlooked. I must admit that I only see it as a storage. Therefore, I was content using the canvass, top zip pouch I got as a freebie (I’m a cheapskate, don’t judge me) just because it’s roomy enough to fit everything in.
A broken foundation bottle later, I quickly realized that a good travel makeup bag offers more than just storage.
Get yourself a makeup bag because of the following reasons:
- To protect your makeup, brushes or toiletries from outside elements – Such as heat, water and pressure (from other luggage/objects in your bag) keeping them in tip-top condition longer.
- To organize your stuff – No need to mix in your makeup with brushes or toiletries (is it just me?). So, you can easily identify where you put something without having to dig in and turn the whole bag inside out (hello tweezers, I see you now!).
- To transfer all your stuff from one bag to another with ease – From your luggage to your gym bag or to your regular bag, you’re sure that you won’t leave something important behind (for me that’s my lip balm).
- To save you money – No more wasted makeup, dented brushes or squeezed out primer, just you, your on-point makeup and a great time! (Sadly, I learned this the hard way!)
What’s a Good Travel Makeup Bag?
Delving deeper into what I store in my makeup bag, where I plan to stash and use it, I came up with a list of things to consider when looking for the best makeup bag for travel:
1. Waterproof Interior/Exterior Material
This is great in case you don’t have any option but to place your makeup bag on a wet surface or in case something breaks or leaks inside the bag.
2. Has a Good Amount of Padding
To protect the contents from pressure or impact in case you accidentally drop or toss your bag.
(like when you suddenly feel the urge to swirl your bag around aiming to shoot it on the chair like Lebron… but missed it — not that I’ve done that before, lol!)
3. Has Good, Sturdy Stitches and Closure
When I say closure, I mean zip, Velcro or a snap-on button.
I’ve dealt with faulty zips and poorly stitched makeup bags, that’s clearly a waste of money. You’d want something to last you longer no matter how much product you put in and how many times you zip/unzip it.
A lot of makeup bags look aesthetically pleasing but if you look closer at the materials and stitches, you can bet it won’t last you a month.
4. Has Compartments for Storing Different Things
Imagine having different compartments to store face, eyes, cheeks, brows and lip products, my OC self couldn’t be happier!
It just makes searching for things a whole lot easier.
5. A Clear Window for Viewing Things
Goes hand in hand with the compartments.
I want to be able to pinpoint where something is from a glance and not having to open every single compartment.
Also, if you are stashing your makeup kit in your carry-on bag during air travels, having a clear makeup bag window makes it easier for TSA to check on your stuff.
6. Easy to Carry
Should have a comfortable handle and shoulder straps in case my hands are full (left hand with my trolley and right hand with a good cup of coffee).
7. Bonus: A Hook or Handle to Easily Hang the Kit in the Bathroom
Perhaps you’re using a public bathroom or simply don’t want to place your makeup/toiletry bag on a wet and dirty counter.
In this case, hooks and handles will surely be your saving grace as it allows you to access your stuff while keeping it safe and dry.
How Do You Clean Makeup or Toiletry Bags?
As most of these bags are made with waterproof material, there’s no need to toss them in the washer or handwash them. Simply wipe any smears or dirt with a damp cloth and let it air dry.
I personally like cleaning my makeup bags with antibacterial wipes (what do you expect from a germaphobe?) just to make sure that it’s thoroughly clean.
A good makeup bag is not something to scrimp on. Think long term and how long you’d like to be able to use not only the bag but the products you’d put in it.
It may seem extra, but I do have various sizes to fit into my luggage and my daily shoulder bag or gym bag, it just makes my life easier and more organized.
If you’re planning to get one, check out these amazing products including two of the products I’m currently using and are still in love with to this day.

10 Tips on How to Pack Your Makeup or Toiletries When Travelling
1. Invest in a Good Makeup Bag
This is the main tool that will keep your products safe and organized, instead of dumping everything in one pouch and realizing that you forgot to bring something.
I forgot an eyeshadow palette before and ended up using lipgloss on my lids – not the look I was going for.
2. Protect Your Compacts With a Cotton Pad
Placing a cotton pad inside the compact of your setting powder, blush and bronzer will help them become shockproof and prevent them from breaking into pieces (sad story!).
3. Use Reusable Travel Bottles or Pots to Store Liquid Items
No need to bring your bulky shampoo and conditioner especially if you’ll only be gone for days. Just transfer them in a small 3oz (TSA allowed size for carry-on bags) bottle, so they can easily fit in your makeup/toiletry bag.
I use small bottles for my skin and hair products, an old (cleaned out, of course) lip balm pot to store a good amount of foundation and an old eye drop bottle for my skin serum.
4. Seal The Cap of Your Liquids With Cling Wrap
Should you plan to bring bottles, make sure that the caps are sealed with cling wrap.
To do that, simply unscrew the cap and place a good amount of wrap on top before replacing the cap. This will help keep the products contained in case of pressure.
I also use cling wrap inside my palettes. In case one of them breaks, I can simply press it back to the pan like nothing happened, instead of making the whole palette look like a war zone.
5. Use Multi-Purpose Products
This will help minimize the amount of stuff you bring. A multipurpose stick that you can use on your eyes, lips, and cheek can already save you enough space on your makeup bag.
Hey ya, Nars Multiple! I love you!.
6. Layer Your Makeup Bag in Between Clothing
The clothing layer helps absorb pressure and protects all the contents of your bag.
7. De-potting
Blank, magnetic palette containers are available to help you customize your palette.
It allows you to bring exactly what you need by de-potting them from their original palette and transferring them onto the blank palette. It also saves you enough space as you don’t have to bring 3-5 eyeshadow, blush or highlighter palettes at the same time.
8. Plan Your Looks and Make a List
Planning your makeup looks in advance can prevent you from bringing products that you won’t use anyway. Listing the products you’d need ensures that you won’t forget an important item behind.
9. Let Go of The “Just in Case” Products
Chances are, you won’t really use them. They’ll just take unwanted space in your bag that could fit more important products.
So, let go of that neon eyeshadow and gunmetal lip balm (ya’ know, in case you feel adventurous!) and replace them with something more important (like your vitamins or your sunscreen).
10. Make Use of Makeup and Toiletries Samples
They fit perfectly inside your makeup/toiletry case. What’s more, is that you won’t shed money-hued tears in case you lose them.
Putting It All Together
Traveling should be an exciting and stress-free experience for everyone and that experience starts at home, as soon as you pack your things.
The makeup and toiletry bags mentioned above offer you peace of mind that wherever you decide to place your bags (checked in or carry-on), your precious (and hard-earned) products are protected and in the same mint condition as before you packed them.
A diamond may be a girl’s best friend, but a good makeup bag is definitely our best travel companion.
